Against the Flow: One Man’s Journey from Vices to Values

Some people march to the beat of their own drum. I, on the other hand, spent much of my youth marching to whatever beat was playing in the background—often dictated by my surroundings. It started innocently enough—a cigarette here, a drink there—rites of passage into what I believed was adulthood. It felt exciting, rebellious, and normal. After all, everyone was doing it!
But "harmless" choices soon snowballed into something far less innocent. Tobacco led to alcohol. Alcohol led to marijuana. Marijuana introduced me to hash, speed, and eventually acid. Each substance came with its own cheap thrill, in it's own way to numb reality or distort it. My curiosity turned into habit, then dependence. Over time, my body and brain paid the price, but the real damage went deeper—relationships crumbled, ambitions faded, and life felt like a foggy, aimless drift.

The Consequences of Going with the Flow

It wasn’t just my lungs or heart taking a hit. My sense of direction and purpose eroded. I had been coasting for too long, letting the tide carry me wherever it pleased. Then came the hard question: Was this the life I wanted?
That question led to reflection, and reflection led to change.

The Shift: Choosing Temperance

I didn’t wake up one morning and magically decide to be a beacon of healthy living. The shift was gradual—peeling away layers of a version of myself I no longer recognized. I made the firm decision to turn away from self-medication, and as I pushed forward, something incredible happened: I started feeling better. My mind sharpened. My body grew stronger. Life, once dulled by substances, became vibrant again.

Temperance became more than just abstaining from vices—it became a philosophy of intentional living. I realized that life wasn’t meant to be dictated by substances, self medicating or fleeting highs. It was meant to be lived fully, with clarity and purpose.
Becoming the Advocate I Once Needed

Looking back, I wondered—where were the voices encouraging balance, strength, and well-being? Where was the guidance to show me a different way?

Instead of dwelling on what was missing, I made a choice: I would be that voice. I would step into the role of educator, mentor, and advocate for healthy living. Young people today face the same pressures I once did, navigating influences that push unhealthy recklessness over confident responsibility. No one needs lectures or scare tactics—they need real conversations about options, common sense choices that have a lasting impact.
I want to partner with those who believe in empowering youth to make decisions that lead to strength, growth, and vitality.
This isn’t about fear—it’s about possibility.

Final Thoughts: A Life Worth Living

I don’t look back on my past with shame— okay, maybe a little! However, we need to see our past as life lessons. Bad choices stack up fast, but good ones, made consistently, can reshape an entire life. Today, I wake up grateful—for clarity, for energy, for the ability to live my truth. And most importantly, I wake up determined to share that freedom with others, helping everyone to realize that their best life begins with the choices they make today.
